Vikram Sahane joined TATA Trusts as Consultant
Vikram Sahane (Nirman 4) has joined the TATA Trusts as a consultant on Health portfolio. Vikram has just finished his post-graduation in Public Health from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences, Trivandrum.Vikram is telling us about his decision…
Being one of the oldest funding agencies, TATA Trusts has long tradition of working with different NGOs, academic institute and state / local government agencies. But, slowly TATA trust is also reinventing them and as a part of this process, they don’t want to see themselves as a just funding agency but also capable of conducting research and taking direct implementation projects independently and that’s where I found my role in TATA trust. My area of interest has been public health research and within trust, I felt, and also being told that I would get opportunity to develop and lead research projects independently and also with partner NGOs.
My primary duty here is of the Clinical Coordinator for the ‘Infectious Diseases among Prison Inmates Study’ which will be carried out with government of Maharashtra, in Pune. I would also be involved in developing various operational research projects with the Trust in near future.
Unfortunately in India, public health research is still concentrated at academic institutions which has not strong ground presence and except for few organizations like SEARCH, most of the other organizations have been engaged in providing services only and their lack of aptitude, technical skills for research results into missing an opportunity to translate their enriched experiences into scientific wisdom which can be used by others. Here also I saw my role when I joined the trust, to help partner organizations, mainly NGOs whom trusts have supporting since so long in conducting quality research and bringing more and more evidences from ground.
So to sum up, I would say that I joined the trust to explore my abilities to implement independent projects, conduct research independently and help other NGOs working in grass root level in difficult areas to bring evidences on large platforms through research.
All the best Vikram for your work ahead !!
Vikram Sahane (Nirman 4)
